Samos is recognized to be one of the very few Green and lush Greek Islands, it is not only a place that catches the eye but it is steeped in History and Architecture which is a must when visiting this amazing place. The Island is known and appreciated for a few of its very famous inhabitants back in 520 BC, Pythagoras the Mathematician of the Greek Antiquity and Aristarchos the Astronomer.Samos is a fairly large Island, with a population of 33,814 people, making it the 9th largest Island in Greece, the local people live mainly off of the tourism and agriculture which is mostly olives and fruits. The local wines have won many awards worldwide and the ouzo from Samos is one of the best in Greece. Samos is also famous for its shipbuilding of Greek fishing boats the Kaikia or Trehantiria.

Samos not only features important monuments and historical stories, or just mountains and hiking trails, it is a modern island, with spectacularly organized beaches, such as Tsamadou, Lemonakia, Votsalakia in Marathokampos, Chrissi Ammos (= “golden sand”), which more than lives up to its name and Psili Ammos (= “fine sand”), with its amazing views across to Asia Minor, that is only a stone’s throw away with a short (1hr 30 minutes) ferry trip over to Kusadasi. The beaches in Pythagorio offer great water sports such as Snorkeling, Jet ski and banana boats along with many more options, whilst in the North of the Island you can feel the wind in your hair with a bit of windsurfing at the local windsurfing school.

Samos is a cosmopolitan Island, if you stay within the resorts of Vathi, Kokkari or Pythagorion you can enjoy the shopping, various restaurants and cocktail bars to sit and watch the world go by. If you prefer something a little more laid back and relaxing why not try, Kerveli, Klima, Posidonio or Mykali which have quiet beaches, picturesque views across to Asia Minor and beautiful beach front tavernas with amazing fresh fish dishes to enjoy. You can also take a short drive to some of the more Mountainous Villages for example Vourliotes and Manolates with super scenic views and is very well known for its Apple Pie). Samos can be a place of late-night fun, as well as a place of peace, rest and relaxation, it has something for everyone.

The Island brings many tourists each year for its great hiking trails, through the beautiful countryside, beaches and mountains, visiting sites such as Pythagoras Cave, The Eupalinos Tunnel which is considered as one of the most important engineering achievements of antiquity. It's a 1036m long tunnel in Samos Island, Greece, built in the 6th century BC to serve as an aqueduct and therefore supply fresh water from Agiades spring the city of Samos (Pythagoreion)., Temple of Hera - the sanctuary which was dedicated to the goddess Hera, the wife of Zeus, with the Archaic temple built in the area being the first of the gigantic free-standing Ionic temples. The site’s rich history and cultural importance have earned it the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the waterfalls of Potami, Mikro and Megalo Seitani, stopping off along the way for local Honey, Herbs and Samian Oil. These are just to name a few of the places you can enjoy if you prefer to stretch your legs.

 

There are many travel options to get you to Samos, during the summer season (Mid April to Mid October) you have the charter flights, for travel out of season you can simply hop on a flight to Athens and enjoy a short 1hr trip from Athens to Samos. There are regularly ferries from Piraeus to Karlovassi and Samos Town (2 main ferry ports on the island) this option is great if you prefer to see some of the neighboring Islands along the way. Or fly to one of the many Islands that surround Samos that will then give you options to catch a small/fast ferry to the harbor of Pythagorio on the South side of the Island.
